How does an employee contribute to a team’s synergy? How does an employee contribute to a team’s synergy? An employee can contribute positively or negatively to a team’s dynamics. Functioning at your highest level is important! Think about your favorite sporting team. Each member on that team has a role. They have  specific duties they must perform to win a game. Let’s take baseball as an example. There are 9 positions on a baseball team. Each of these positions are important and without one of them, a game can’t be played. A work team operates in a similar fashion. Each team member has a role that is as important as all of the other roles on the team and without one person, the team will likely be able to function, but timeliness and quality is affected if someone isn’t functioning at their fullest capabilities. Treating others with respect is important! This seems so easy, but it can be really hard when you don’t feel you are being treated with respect. It can also be hard during conflict or when someone expresses a strong opinion. A good team member is culturally sensitive, is inclusive and treats others with respect. This creates a trusting team environment where everyone feels safe to voice their ideas and contribute in a positive way. Having a positive attitude is important! Being negative creates a toxic work environment for you and others. Having a positive attitude doesn’t stop negative things from occurring, but it does allow you to approach situations with an open mind and in a more conducive way to find solutions. When you are positive others will feed off of your positive nature. Being present and in the moment is important! This has two meanings… First, punctuality is a must! Be on time to meetings and don’t waste other’s time. In a world that has gone virtual, consider video conferencing instead of just audio. Secondly, focus on the topic at hand and be in the moment. Consider this, when you don’t comprehend a page you are reading because you aren’t focused on the book you have to re-read the page. This is the same concept for meetings. When the team isn’t focused and in the moment, multiple meetings may be required. This is inefficient for everyone. Take notes, participate and focus.
